Blog Topic # 7: Management Lessons!

I am not a poet but I was asked to write a poem about management
So I get a managed to do it no matter what because it’s a 5 last extra credit opportunity man
This poem suppose to conceal things that we learned in this class
Well that’s not a problem because I learned a lot in this class compare to my other class
This class happened to be my favorite class of the semester
Along with all sorts of amusing activities where we played the role as stars
I really enjoyed the activity in which our team won was to create an egg protection device
Where all teams’ mechanism failed, ours stays round off and nice
After the first exam in class we were challenged to apply our managerial skill outside
Mcgangbang was the whole purpose of that in which I ate only a bite.
Lego was given as a last activity of the semester in which we all went so crazy
Because the price is open book final that we all would love to take
Since we work so hard through the entire semester finally we all get so lazy.

Motivation

Throughout this semester professor Edward B Kurpis has used various motivation tools to motivate us in learning and appreciating the subject of management. These tools are class (Job) design which includes five core class (Job) characteristic such as Skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback,  rewards ( intrinsic and extrinsic) and Maslow's five level of hierarchy needs. Using these tools throughout the semester really motivated us to keep engage in the class and helped us learn the subject of management in easy and simple way.

I was motivated by "The power of vision" documentary in this class. This documentary really motivates me to find my own "star fish" meaning find my vision for future. It says action without vision is time passing and vision without action is just a dream, never come true. So now I am on the process of taking right action to have my vision come true.

This class motivates me to change who I am now in terms of dealing with people from the management prospective. I learned a lot of management principles form this class that I now apply to my daily activities at home as well in public. I was surprised to find some of the management characteristics that exist in me that was unaware of. Now that I know so can take proud by exercising them more.

All in all, this is one of my favorite class this semester. It is my pleasure to have professor Edward B Kurpis for this course.

The Power of the Vision

The Power of the Vision
After watching the brilliant video called The Power of the Vision, I found that creating a Vision is really important for our work, our life and our future. As the video says that we all possess the ability to change the world. However for this to happen we all need to have a vision remember,
Action without vision merely wastes of time.
Vision without action is just a dream.
Vision coupled with action can change the world.
This video really motivates me to create a vision for my future. However, it is not an easy content, if you don’t know the steps. So fortunately this video has provided us with the steps on how to create a vision. Here are the Steps:
1, Develop a vision by Leader
2, Vision must be shared and supported by the community
3, it must be Comprehensive and Details
4, Positive and Inspiring
So according to these vision creating steps I have came up with several visions for my future. The first vision is to open a small business after graduation with my couple of my close friends. We still planning for it however, we already started to save money. So we are looking forward to start that business right after graduation. This will be our part time business.
The second vision is to find a job in my career field. My major is IT. I have six more classes to graduate. So I am looking to have an internship while I am in college and a full time job after graduation in IT field. I have been visiting Starr Career Center frequently to get up dated information about internships and jobs. They help me edit my resume to make it more accurate, effective and professional. So I am very positive that I will have an internship by next semester.

Decision Making

Blog Topic # 3: Decision Making
Well on Monday’s class activity on decision making process I have used the accommodation behave to handle the chaos. Accommodation meaning allowing others to decide for you when your interests are not critical to you. I have chosen that because I was kind of happy with my grade. So therefore I let my fellow classmate decide what changes they want to make on the second exam that will benefit them or help them to get their desire grade in this class.
Well that doesn’t mean that I didn’t bother to do anything. I have participated through the entire decision making process in order to finalized the bill with 100% students agreement. I was agreed on some proposals and disagreed on some to get the best result possible. So after discussing about it with the entire class; I believe we have came to better conclusion on how we want our 2nd and 3rd exam to be.
Yes I have seen students using other methods such compete to win and compromise but I haven’t seen avoidance. Everybody cooperates to get to best solution. It was possible because we all value the reward and therefore we effectively use the scarce resource.

An Eggs-cellent Way to Plan

Well our goal was to build an effective egg protection device out of eight straws, two feet tape and an egg. We understood the deadline that it has to happen within 30 minutes time limit; 20 minutes to plan and 10 minutes to act. Most of all we value the reward that we will get which is 10 points added our final grade if we can create an effective device that will protect the egg from breaking.
We all valued the reward and played an effective role to accomplish the goal. During our planning process; we all heard each other ideas about creating the device. We also had them draw their idea in the paper to see how is going to look. Then as a group we decided one which looked more effective. Then we divided the tasks to each member then as soon as we got the resources; we start working on the project. Even though there was scarcity on resources but we effectively managed them.
Well we were little nervous because of the time limit to complete the task. We were literally shaking when we tie the egg and straws together. Therefore our straws were uneven and came out little different than it looks on the drawing. As a result we were little afraid that if it was going the pass the evaluation process, But thanks God that it did pass.
Well we choose this structure out of several other alternatives because we all believed that it will be the most effective one to accomplish our goal.
So after we done creating the device we actually test it on our own to see how effective it was. We were satisfied and strongly believed that it will pass the evaluation process. Finally it did. So thank everyone in our group for being part of such an effective team.

My experience living in United States

Blog Topic # 1: Culture Shock
Hi,
My name is Tofazzal Hossain. I am from Dhaka, Bangladesh. So when I first came to U.S. in March 2004; I found a lot of things different in U.S. then the way they are in Bangladesh. I have experienced it as a whole new world which runs entirely different way than mine native country does.
Let me start off with the schooling system in Bangladesh. Students in Bangladesh graduate high school in tenth grade. They study on their parent’s expense since their pre-k to as long as their parents can afford. They have off on every Friday which basically is their weekend. Then they are back to school from Saturday to Thursday. If you have been following alone, you probably noticed that nothing is matching with U.S. education system.

Secondly, I want to talk about the transportation. In Bangladesh one of the affordable and most convenient transportation is called Riksha (tricycle). These are similar to the one that we have in central park area. People in Bangladesh uses them as we use taxi in U.S. unlike U.S. they don't need license to operate those tricycle in Bangladesh. Mostly the poor working class people do this job whereas in U.S. there is no class distinction for driving taxi. There is no underground subway in Bangladesh nor there any metro card system for buses and trains. In Bangladesh you buy the ticket up front before you get to the bus or train.

Thirdly, I want to talk about the forms of greeting that are most commonly use in U.S; not necessarily are as commonly use in Bangladesh. Such as Excuse me, I am sorry, God bless you etc. people are more polite in U.S. then Bangladesh.
